CHAPTER TWELVE

Chez picks the meal he will offer her with care. He has the big kitchen to himself. It seems that the girls have gone to bed and Javier and Armando must be dealing with the baby-faced guard. He feels a pang of guilt for not helping, but he’s been going on empty for nearly two days. A little recharge is needed or he’ll mess up somewhere. Everybody needs a break.

And a break with Alejandra sounds fantastic. He can’t believe they had sex. Smiling at the thought, he thinks over everything, her lips, her thighs, her groans. It isn’t just the sex, though that was wonderful. It’s the closeness. It’s her letting him in, trusting him, letting him hold her afterward. Maybe this is finally it. The moment he finds the girl of his dreams.

Opening the double-doored stainless steel fridge, he finds nearly everything he could want. Chez picks a delicious-looking thick-sliced turkey, hunks of grainy bread, and a fancy mustard and makes two sandwiches. He snags two waters and then grabs a bottle of expensive champagne under his arm just in case.

He feels like celebrating. Alejandra. Even her name is beautiful.

It’s like she’s already found a way into his heart. He decides right now to let her know how serious he is about her, how head-over-heels. It could be a mistake, but they don’t have a lot of time, and who knows what could happen to them in the next twenty-four hours. How would he feel if he died without letting her know how he felt?

Practically floating, he walks to the pool deck with his spoils in his hands. “I hope you like turk . . .”

His words die in his mouth.

Alejandra isn’t in the hot tub.

She isn’t in the pool area at all, not that he can see. After setting the food and drink down, he jogs around the deck, checking in and around every structure he can find, including the pool house, which is empty, and the bar. Empty, too.

His heart is beginning to pound out of control. Where is she? Did they miss a guard in their sweep? They checked everywhere.

He tears into the house, pounding up and down steps until Javier comes up from the basement, looking tired and confused.

“What’s going on?” her brother asks.

“Have you seen Ale?”

Javier shakes his head. “I thought she was with you.”

“She was. I came in to get her some food and . . .”

“I’m sure she’s just upstairs,” Javier says striding toward them.

Together, they check all the rooms, opening closets, shower curtains. Chez finds Brooklyn and Mei asleep in the same bed, curled around each other, and he is careful not to wake them. Still, when he can’t find her upstairs, he feels the strong urge to scream her name.

“Where could she be?” he asks Javier.

Concern on his face, he leads them down the stairs.

They toss the main floor and then the basement. Chez tries not to look too long at the guard hanging from chains in the laundry room.
